The 2027 Keynote by Paul Needham, Scheide Librarian Emeritus, Princeton University ↑
“The Mainz Catholicon, the Missale Speciale, and the Hidden Channels of Paper Supply”
Paul Needham’s talk will explore two major controversies in the study of the origins of printing in the West. First, is the Missale Speciale plausibly the earliest surviving example of European typography? Second: can apparent problems of the 1460 Mainz Catholicon be explained by traditional typography, or do they require a hypothesis that it was printed from 2-line stereotype strips and not movable type? He will argue that the two long-lasting controversies are methodological siblings. The crux to understanding both lies in paper evidence—which can compel certain answers and negate others. It is no coincidence that the scholarly study of paper developed over the period of these two controversies, from the late nineteenth century to the present, but the power of paper evidence is still overlooked by many bibliographers.
About our speaker:
Over the course of a long career Paul Needham has published many book historical studies, particularly concentrating on fifteenth-century printing. He has worked at the Huntington Library and Museum, Morgan Library and Museum, Sotheby’s, and Princeton University Library, where he retired as Scheide Librarian in 2020. He is a gold medallist of the Bibliographical Society, London.

Contribute to the Annual Meeting Travel Fund ↑
As part of our efforts to cultivate community and maintain programming that is free and accessible, we want to acknowledge the challenges facing some of our members as institutional budgets are trimmed and travel costs rise.
Please consider a contribution that will help subsidize travel to the Annual Meeting for BSA members in need. Bibliography Week and the Annual Meeting are a highlight of the year, so we hope you’ll pitch in a little to help someone else enjoy the experience, too.
